A shooting involving an Alice police officer ends Thanksgiving evening

What started as a tense evening for the Alice Police Department quickly turned into relief – but not the kind of relief that comes with a five-course Thanksgiving spread and stretchy pants.

According to Alice Police Chief Eden Garcia, on Thursday, November 28, at approximately 11:23 p.m., Alice Police received a call from a man who said he was holding a young woman in a back room and threatening to hurt her. Police arrived a minute later and found a young woman and child inside the house, with a man standing next to them holding a knife. The man, 21-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez, lunged at the woman, and an Alice police officer shot him in the leg.

Rodriguez was given first aid at the scene and then hospitalized. Upon his release, he was booked into the Jim Wells County Jail on one count of assault with a deadly weapon on a $300,000 bond and one count of unlawful confinement on a $25,000 bond.

Chief Garcia said the Alice police officer who shot Rodriguez has been placed on administrative leave while the Texas Rangers investigate, which is protocol.
