A Chicago-area police officer was killed while responding to an “armed criminal” at a bank

AND Chicago-area police officer died after being shot while responding to a “call regarding an armed felon” who was seen leaving a bank, officials say.

Killing Oak Park Police Detective Allan Reddins, Friday, December 40, “marks the first death of an Oak Park police officer since 1938.” the village said in a statement.

“Our police department is in a difficult situation right now,” Oak Park Police Chief Shatonya Johnson said at a news conference Friday.. “I’m hurting. His family is suffering.”

According to Johnson, Reddins, who joined the department in 2019, was one of several officers who encountered the suspect leaving the Chase Bank branch. When police asked the suspect to show his hands, he allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire on Reddins.

“At 9:36 a.m., the Oak Park Fire Department responded to a call of shots fired in the 800 block of Lake Street in Oak Park. Upon arrival, firefighter/paramedics learned that Oak Park Police Officer Reddins had been shot in the left side, was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in critical condition, and succumbed to his injuries at approximately 10:10 a.m.,” the release said. “Perpetrator he was shot in the leg,” he added. “He is in custody, being treated at Loyola, and his condition is stable.”

Johnson described Reddins as a “dedicated father” who now leaves behind his 19-year-old son, mother and siblings.

She also called Reddins a “born leader” who closed significant cases during his time as a detective.

“I thought he would also be a phenomenal field training officer and I couldn’t wait for him to become a sergeant,” Johnson added.
